FEATURE // Roanna Wells // Tracing Process

Tracing Process is the latest project by local artist and friend of Mama Social, Roanna Wells. It is the start of an investigation into the variety of different people and their marks. It allows the public the opportunity to be present during the creation of work and to contribute their own marks to the finished piece.
The exhibition is open to all ages and we’ve already had a number of young people, children and even some little ones take part and add their marks both to the painting, and the more interactive expressive wall and tables.
Tracing Process is on for another two weeks until 15th July, open TuesdaySaturday 11-5pm at Yorkshire Artspace, 21 Brown Street – just along the road from the Showroom Cinema and opposite the Rutland Arms pub.
More info can be found via the Yorkshire Artspace website.

CAROLINE ARMSTRONG // Healthy You Hypnotherapy // Self Hypnosis

Caroline Armstrong from Healthy You Hypnotherapy came to Mama Social and gave us a few tips on self hypnosis, as promised here is the guide…

This is technique you can use several times a day to help you to take a short break from what you are doing and refocus on your goal and how you want to feel.

Follow these simple steps…

1. Take a deep breath in, close your eyes and breathe out.

2. Count backwards slowly from 100-95

3. Say your positive statement slowly and with conviction, 3 times.

4. Count up slowly 95-100

5. Breathe in a revitalising colour, and open your eyes and breathe out

Jessops Superheroes will be taking place on Sunday 21st May at Graves Park. The aim of the event is not only to raise money, but also to celebrate the superheroes that care for and save the lives of Sheffield’s tiniest patients each day.

More than 7000 babies are born at Jessops Hospital every year. The hospital supports families through all stages of pregnancy, from conception to care after birth. This includes caring for critically ill and premature babies in one of the largest and most specialist, Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the country.

Babies being treated on the unit require constant 24 hour care, sometimes for weeks or even months. Each day can be a struggle and your support can help these families, during what can be one of the most stressful times of their lives.

The day will start at 10.30am where you can choose from a buggy friendly 2.5k route, or a more challenging 4k route, with a few bumps and lumps along the way. Bikes, Trikes, buggies, slings and even dads shoulders are welcome to help you around the course.

Rather than buying a ticket for the event, the charity are asking that each attendee raises £15 in sponsorship; with 100% of the money raised going to help the Jessops Hospital continue their great work.

For more information about the event you can visit the Jessops Super Heroes page on event supporters DuoCall’s website.

Snacking in Preschool Children – Volunteer for a University of Sheffield Research Project.

The University of Sheffield’s School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) are currently looking for parents or caregivers of children ages 2 to 3 years to take party in a study to find out more about eating habits in young children.

The study will be conducted over a three-week period in your home. Each week the researchers will ask you to complete a four day weighed food diary.

During the first week of the study they will ask you to make no alterations to the way you feed your child.

In the second and third week they will provide you with a selection of snacks to give to your child at their usual snack time.

By taking part in this research you will contribute to their understanding of eating behaviour and dietary intake in preschool children.

You will be provided with all snacks for your child for two weeks and offered a £25 high street voucher for taking part. They will also provide you with the nutritional analysis and breakdown of what your child has eaten from the weighed food diaries.

This project has been ethically approved by the School of Health and Related Research ethics review panel (007850).

If you are interested in taking part or want to know more about the study, then please get in touch with Colette Kearney at c.kearney@sheffield.ac.uk or call 07712410932.

‘Pop up and Play’ is a Leeds based events company focused on creating cool spaces for families to hang out.  Formed in 2014 through a mutual love of design and belief that just because something is created for children the aesthetic of a space should not be compromised. Since then they have developed into a company that not only specialises in families at events, but also theming and visual merchandising.

As part of Leeds indie food festival they will be opening a custom built kinder café which will be accessible via a free water taxi from Leeds Station.

We caught up with Hannah from Pop up and Play to tell us more about it…

What is it?

Leeds first Pop Up restaurant designed with families in mind, inspired
by the kinder cafe culture in Germany and across Scandinavia.
Ultimately, its a space for parents who don’t want to compromise on
being in an interesting, design led space but also want to provide
their children with something creative to be part of. All of our
events are about creating cool spaces for families to enjoy together.
They’re cool, creative, imagination led and utterly instagrammable!

Where is it?

Set on the first floor of the old Google garage at Leeds Dock the
space is light airy and will be filled with interesting and exciting
activities for children. A purpose built imaginative play space,
reading nook and unique toys.

What can we expect?

Food is created by Tom Cockerill, the Rare Breed Chef. There will be
two brunch sittings per day and one supper. Brunch is a modern British
offering for adults, whilst kids will enjoy a visually stimulating
bento box brunch, this is rounded off by a family waffle for the
table. Supper is Italian inspired; meatballs three ways, buttered
linguini and finished with a duck egg creme brulee. Supper is
certainly a more relaxed affair with a movie on for the children and
red wine a plenty for the adults. Bear Nibbles will be there to run a
super cool veggie monster competition and Okido Magazine are supplying
us with the ultimate in cool brunch reading magazines for the kids.

The Details…

Children: £8
